About
Judge Maritza Dominguez Braswell
I currently serve as a United States Magistrate Judge in the District of Colorado. I am deeply interested in the growing role of artificial intelligence in litigation, legal institutions, and society. I believe we all have a responsibility to engage responsibly and critically with this technology, as it helps shape our future.
As Co-Chair of the District of Colorado's AI Committee, I support our Court's AI governance and engagement efforts. In collaboration with colleagues around the country, I also recently launched JAIC, the Judicial AI Consortium. This is a judges-only forum for candid, cross-jurisdictional discussion about how AI is showing up in courts.
I am a member of the ABA Science & Technology Law Section and actively engaged with The Sedona Conference Working Groups 1 and 13, contributing to projects at the intersection of litigation and AI.
I teach "Reimagining Justice: AI, Disruption, and the Future Legal Leader" at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. I write regularly about AI and justice. And I author The AI Brief, a newsletter for judges interested in AI's implications for courts, legal institutions, and society.
Before joining the bench, I practiced complex commercial litigation, co-founded a tech-forward law firm, and led a large team of legal professionals at the Colorado Attorney General's Office. That experience informs my approach to AI in law: grounded in real-world experience, mindful of institutional constraints, and anchored in public service.
